What a learning disability diagnosis cannot measure

      By Michelle Steiner

One of the hardest parts of having a learning disability is when I feel that I do not measure up. I think of the tasks that give me difficulty, like not being able to do math or drive. I also have a documented disability, which is a medical condition. Not something that is not my forte, or an excuse. The evaluations and struggles in life measure the challenges that I face in life. A test or diagnosis of one does not tell the whole story. It cannot tell what the future holds, all the information a person knows, what they are good at, or their character.

Firstly, an evaluation gives a prediction of the future, not a clear picture. Many factors go into how this will play out. The person's interests, motivation, and support in the community at home influence this as well. I can remember having professionals who did not think that I could go to college or earn my bachelor's degree, because of my difficulty with math. The predictions of this being a challenge with math and learning were correct. I did struggle in courses, especially math and science-related ones. But it was not impossible, with the use of accommodations. Careful planning, extended test time, and tutoring helped me to be successful. I do not think that I would have as successful without all of the support.

Testing also does not show everything that a person knows, only what the person administering it does. I may not know a question being asked, but I know other things. I may even know something, the evaluator does not know.

Talents are also not considreed during these assessments. Unless you fit the criteria that the test is evaluating. I can remember expressing an interest in writing articles and organizing photographs. The Physcatrist's report acknowledged my interest, but they said it would be beyond my capabilities. I have not let the difficulties get in the way of becoming published or taking photographs on my walks.

Testing also cannot measure the character of a person. The difficulties of having a disability did not weaken me; rather, it has made me a stronger and resilient person. I have also become a more caring and compassionate person. It has also created empathy for others with them. Because of my experience, I understand what many people with a learning disability are facing in a classroom or workplace. It does not mean that we are carbon copies of each other, but we have similar experiences.

Testing does have a purpose for people with learning disabilities. Having a diagnosis gives a name to what the person has. People cannot see them and know the person is not learning. It is necessary for support services programs to help the person.

.For many years, I did not feel that I measured up, with having one. I now know that an evaluation does not measure every aspect. Now I realize that it does not tell everything that a person knows, only what the person admiring the test does. Testing has also not determined my future. Yes, they were right about the challenges, but I made the choice not to let it stand in the way of success. Testing also showed my interests and my abilities to do them. I had to seek those out and chose to egage in them. When I read, write, or take pictures, I feel happy and empowered. I do not feel frustrated or disabled. Evaluations also do not reveal a person's character. You cannot measure a person's kindness, compassion, or empathy with a piece of paper. Testing can only measure a short portion of a person. There is much more depth to a person to be considered.
