From Confusion to Confidence Making Coffee and Tea with a Disability

      By Michelle Steiner

Making a cup of coffee the traditional way has always been a challenge for me. My brain gets lost in the steps of how much water and grounds to add. I can remember when my cousin and I were little, we tried to make coffee. We added crayons and hot water to a percolator and almost burnt my grandparents' house down. My cousin learned later how to make coffee, yet I struggled with how to do this. Mastering how to make tea was easier for me. I could boil the water and add it to the tea. Tea became my go-to drink, and I only had coffee when I was out until I found a Keurig. I found it was easier to put a coffee pod in the brewer and select a cup than a traditional coffee pot. Others have not viewed my newfound accomplishment in such a way. Others have thought that using one was being lazy, a scam, or wasteful.

I bought my first machine on Black Friday, shortly after my husband moved in. He lives on coffee and noted that I did not have one. When I told him why I could not make a cup of coffee, we decided to buy a Keurig. We tried one at an arts festival earlier that year, and it worked well for me. I looked at the ads and found a black Friday special. I had a person who shamed me for shopping on that day and thought that it was a scam. I can remember the person saying that they had deals all the time. I have found sales at other times, but this was when we needed it.

People have also complained that the pods are wasteful and bad for the environment. Most of the pods are recyclable. Another option is to get refillable pods that you can put coffee grounds in and reuse.

I have also had people who have thought that using a Keurig was the easy way out. I have heard people shame a person for using one. I have also heard people say that society would not be able to function if modern gadgets no longer worked. I am not against people using traditional or modern technology. We have both types in our home. In our kitchen sits a simple coffee pot and a Keurig. Having both types gives him the choice to use the traditional pot or the brewer. Having the modern brewer available is an example of universal design. Universal design is a system where all people can use it and benefit.

My Keurig enables me to make a cup of coffee or tea. Other than tea, I am not able to make beverages. My brain gets lost in a haze of confusion, on the steps of how to prepare it. Others may judge me for using one, but I cannot control the thoughts and actions of others. I have found a solution that works for me and is my cup of tea.
